What is a Roller Coaster?
Roller coasters are a popular amusement ride developed for amusement parks and modern theme parks. The first roller coasters were made out of wood. The tracks on a roller coaster are similair to the ones on railroad track. The track can consist of many elements including hills, drops, inversions, etc. Most roller coasters have multiple cars in which passengers sit and are restrained by seat belts. Two or more cars hooked together are called a train. Some roller coasters can function with only one car.The first roller coasters were believed to have originated from the so-called "Russian Mountains", which were specially constructed hills of ice, located especially around Saint Petersburg. Built in the 17th century, the slides were built to a height of between 70 and 80 feet (24 m), consisted of a 50 degree drop, and were reinforced by wooden supports.
There are many different types of roller coasters, ranging from wooden to B&M. Each type of track is suited for a particular purpose. For example, wooden tracks are merely for the purpose of hills and drops, while steel coasters are suited for inversions and sudden turns, and B&M made for tracks above head.
